چکیده

The 2D Cellular Automata model, MAGFLOW, simulates lava flows and an algorithm based on the Monte Carlo approach solves the anisotropic flow direction problem. The model was applied to reproduce a lava flow formed during the 2001 Etna eruption. This eruption provided the opportunity to verify the ability of MAGFLOW to simulate the path of lava flows which was made possible due to the availability of the necessary data for both modeling and subsequent validation. MAGFLOW reproduced quite accurately the spread of flow. A good agreement was highlighted between the simulated and observed length on steep slopes, whereas the area covered by the lava flow tends to be overestimated. The major inconsistencies found in the comparison between simulated and observed lava flow due to neglecting the effects of ephemeral vent for-

Lava flows impact prediction at Mount Etna by Cellular Automata

Millions of people live either on or in the surrounding areas of about six hundred worldwide volcanoes, which are known to be capable of renewed activity. The individuation of those areas that are more likely to be interested by new events is of fundamental relevance for mitigating possible consequences, both in terms of loss of human lives and material properties. Here we show a new methodolog...

A Cellular Automata Methodology for Evaluating Lava Flow Hazard at Mount Etna (italy)

Different worldwide volcanic areas are densely populated and urbanized. For instance, in Italy, despite being the most active volcano in Europe, Mt Etna is home to approximately one million people. During the last decades, the vulnerability of the Etnean area has increased exponentially due to continued, at times wild, urbanization, with the consequence that new eruptions may involve even great...

Lava Flow Simulation with Cellular Automata: Applications for Civil Defense and Land Use Planning

The determination of areas exposed to new eruptive events in volcanic regions is crucial for diminishing consequences in terms of human causalities and damages of material properties. In this paper, we illustrate a methodology for defining flexible high-detailed lava invasion hazard maps which is based on an robust and efficient Cellular Automata model for simulating lava flows. We also present...

Near Real Time Forecasting of Lava Flow Paths Using Magflow Modeldriven by Thermal Satellite Data

Timely predictions of the areas likely to be inundated by lava flows are of major interest to hazard managers during a volcanic eruption. To this aim several models have been developed, which deal with various aspects of flow emplacement and cooling. That challenge has inspired the INGV-CT to develop the MAGFLOW Cellular Automata model to simulate lava flows [6]. It is based on a steady state s...

Complex Systems Modeling with Cellular Automata and Genetic Algorithms: An Application to Lava Flows

Cellular Automata are parallel computational models which are capable to give rise to heterogeneous emergent behaviors notwithstanding simple local rules of evolution. In this review paper, a methodology for modeling complex natural systems through Macroscopic Cellular Automata is presented and applied to lava flow simulation. In particular, the 2001 Mt. Etna volcano Nicolosi (Italy) case study...
